I consider myself a lifetime environmentalist and strongly agree that we need to mitigate the effects of humans on open space lands. However, I know from many decades of personal experience that humans and wildlife are much more mutually compatible than is believed at OSMP, Friends of Open Space, etc. If we do not interfere with physical habitat, food supply, etc., wildlife quickly learns to ignore humans - we become impertinent. I've seen this on many federal properties in the West and all over the world (Serengenti, Galapagos). By preserving open space lands we've already won 90% of the battle - providing habitat. In most cases it is not necessary to exclude humans in order to "protect" the fauna. As long as we only (respectfully) observe wildlife, it is not necessary to lock us out, including seasonal grassland bird closures. It takes only a few generations for wildlife to learn this, as is evidenced throughout the West on Federal lands that are properly managed. So please, representatives, do not support closures to humans until you fully examine the true necessity for doing so, and with an open mind that wildlife and people may be more compatible than "conventional wisdom" in your ranks would allow.

Bluestem to mountain bikers?? And Shanahan Ridge?? No way please. Often the bikers are polite and obey the rules and stop for hikers but sometimes they are not. Not only would this create more problems between the two and needless to say it would be dangerous - it would also have a vast, degrading impact on the trails. Bluestem is single file I am sure many injuries will be incurred.
