ReplyDeleteI could not state the issues or my opinion about them any more clearly than have already been stated above. I would only mention that Christine’s statement “We love to bike the trail on Marshall Mesa but we no longer hike there” says it all. Every hiker with whom I have spoken about opening up South Boulder open space to bikes – even those who are also bicyclists – say something similar. When there are bikes on or near trails, hikers are inclined to stay away from them. Many trails in and around Boulder have already been opened to bicyclists, narrowing the options for us hikers. Do the bicyclists need to have access to EVERY Boulder Open Space area? Can not a few of the areas remain peaceful, undamaged, and safe for the hikers, their children and pets?
ReplyDeleteRegarding the parking lot proposals, I only want to add to the comments of the other opponents that one of the most beautiful vistas for residents and visitors to the Shanahan Ridge, Devil’s Thumb and Table Mesa neighborhoods, is the pristine view of the mountains and open space to the south east and west of Greenbriar and Lehigh. A paved parking lot there would be an ugly and unwelcome reminder of encroaching “civilization”. If this plan were implemented it would ruin the enjoyment I and many others have of the very special peace we share up here. The Shanahan Ridge neighborhoods are densely populated but, in spite of many families with dogs living here, still remarkably quiet. Please don’t ruin this for us.

ReplyDeleteI do not support opening any more trails to bikers in the southwest areas of the county. I live near hiking and biking trails in this area and do participate in both activities. When I want to walk I avoid all trails that allow bikes. The two activities are not compatible for either party. Hikers and walkers reflect a larger proportion of recreational participants. They also include the older and younger of our population. They however, are not represented as vigourously in organized interest groups or associations. Please retain pedestrian only trails throughout our county. Understandably we all need to share paths that provide access into the city center to facilitate bikers that utilize this form of transportation for their daily activities.
