Neighborhood Protection: Compromise Ideas

5 comments:

  1. I understand that there are people who need to drive to the trailheads. Instead of spending money and damaging the environment by building new parking lots, use lots already in existence. There are many schools within minutes of the trailheads (Bear Creek, Mesa, Fairview...) and they all have large parking lots which are empty on the weekends. Have a shuttle service drive people from a school parking lot up to the trailhead and back on the weekends during the busy time of year. Charge a fee to cover the cost of the shuttle.

  3. I am posting in "compromise ideas" section because I believe in compromise and no one, I think, opposes neighborhood protection. But neighborhood protection seems to mean, to many people posting here, preventing anyone who isn't an immediate neighbor from using the open space that the entire city paid for. This open space belongs to all of us--it doesn't just belong to the lucky people who live the closest to it. All city residents should be allowed to enjoy it. If the close in S. neighbors don't want a parking lot, that's fine--then they need to allow (and not complain about) people parking on the street in front of their houses. They knew where they were moving when they moved there.

Similarly, it's okay if people don't want to share trails with bikes. But then you need to allow other bike trails to be built, or you need to allow bikes to use the trails some days, and hikers to use them other days. Same for people who want to walk without dogs--or with dogs. There is plenty of room to accommodate the needs and interests of everyone--if only people will be respectful of others and not try to claim domain over things and places that are not theirs alone.

  5. Encouraging non-auto transport:
I really don't see increasing public transport as a significant alternative with the 1) frequency of the SKIP service (every 15 minutes on weekends)where you could drive in say 4 minutes from TM & Broadway with no wait times and 2) the cost $2 each way per person no matter how far. To make the SKIP go more frequently or cost less would require more base users which would require higher density populations along it's route and greater general use in general. A short trip reduced fare (say $0.50 each way) could help, but the larger issue is probably the time (say 5 minute walk to stop, 8 minute wait time on avg, 5 minute bus ride = 18 min.). I would focus on bike parking as a more realistic near term alternative.
